New Muslim network for BT employees
BT has formally recognised a network of its Muslim employees.
Islam is the second largest faith group in the UK and the fastest
growing religion in the world, according to BT business improvement
practitioner for netcentricity Sameer Alam, who - together with an
interim management committee - will be leading the BT Muslim Network
(BTMN).
The need for a special network in BT was realised after having set up a
BT Muslim group. "Through e-mailing and word of mouth, we quickly found
that we had almost 300 members," said Sameer.
They identified opportunities and concerns that were shared amongst a
large selection of Muslims within the company, he added. "The biggest
concern was that of a lack of multi-faith prayer facilities within key
BT buildings - and we have been working closely with colleagues in
group human resources to address this," said Sameer.
Multi-faith prayer facilities are now available in a number of BT
buildings - including BT Centre in London. It's a key concern for
Muslims, explained Sameer.
"There is a requirement that, as a Muslim, we must pray five times a
day - and at least two to three of these prayers will fall within the
working day," he said.
One of the main objectives of the BTMN will be to help improve
understanding between BT people and their Muslim colleagues and
customers to help encourage an atmosphere of greater co-operation and
inclusion, said Sameer.
"We aim to set up a mentoring scheme in order to benefit our members -
by bringing together members with similar interests and so provide
personal and professional development to our members," he said..
"We will also be working closely with all other BT networks to ensure
that wherever there are any overlaps in aims and objectives that we
work together to achieve these."
The network will be open to both Muslims and non-Muslims. For further information, e-mail sameer.alam@bt.com or call (020) 7356 3158. |
